Sign Language
At Word Works we use American Sign Language (ASL) with typically developing toddlers, those presenting with speech delays, deaf and hard-of hearing clients, deaf parents, and with teachers and students in total-communication classrooms. Signs are a form of expressive and visual communication. They can be one's primary means of communication or help as a bridge while one is learning to use new vocabulary and to speak.
Young children often benefit from using signs to express their needs while learning to speak and communicate before they can talk. Babies as young as 8 months can learn to speak with their hands before their mouths have the coordination to produce words. Signs can greatly reduce tantrums and frustration. Not all speech-language pathologists know how to sign or use them with their clients. This is one of our specialties at Word Works!
