Consultations

Start your communication journey by speaking with a speech pathologist from the comfort of your home or work. Discuss concerns you have, ask questions, and learn about options available to help you. Telephone and telehealth sessions are available. Discuss an initial screening or if a full evaluation is recommended. We will make referrals to other professionals as needed.

Our first 20 minute phone consultation is FREE!

Consultative therapy sessions are helpful on a one-time basis, a program for 1-3 months, or occasional check-ins over time. We are flexible! We will discuss progress for home, ideas to practice, and the next steps toward reaching your communication goals.

Screenings
& Evaluations

Speech-language pathologists assess and diagnose communication difficulties and disorders from toddlers through adults. We look at language development, speech sound productions, motor coordination difficulties, stuttering, social language difficulties, issues related to hearing loss, autism, swallowing, and more. We are experts in our field and have extensive experience in identifying areas that are affecting how people communicate.

An initial speech-language screening and evaluation has several purposes:

  • Determine if a child’s skills are age-appropriate

  • Decide if we can meet the client's needs

  • Make recommendations about services

  • Establish goals and a service plan

We start with a shorter screening (approximately 30 minutes) and determine if further more extensive testing is needed. We may refer children for a hearing evaluation with an audiologist. If we are uncertain about the cause of a delay, we may also refer for a developmental pediatrician evaluation, occupational, or physical therapy in addition to speech therapy services as needed. Word Works is only providing evaluations for early intervention 1-3 year-olds at this time.

Therapy & Coaching Services

The goal of speech therapy is to bring a child's skills to their age-appropriate or developmental range, and assist adults in reaching their personal goals. Sessions at Word Works are offered in a consultative model. We collaborate with the client's parents, caregivers, teachers, and families.

Weekly meetings are available to coach parents and share ideas on how to target speech and language goals during the child's daily activities in natural environments. Often therapy with young children appears to be "play," however this is how we best engage and teach them functional skills. We provide creative ideas in structuring toys, home, and practice throughout the day.

We observe children playing and engaging with their parents during daily activities. Your speech-language pathologist (SLP) will give positive feedback and explain how to best use toys, books, games, and household items with your child. Telehealth is a great way to meet from home. We do some in-home visits and school observations.

Programs are individually designed to support older children's school IEP goals at home.

Adult consultations and sessions are available for accent modification to communicate more clearly and easily in Standard American English at work, public speaking, and rehabilitation therapy for listening with a cochlear implant.
